What You Need To Know About Lasers

Fans of the Austin Powers movies will probably remember one of the defining moments of the first movie. In the scene, Dr. Evil is concocting a scheme to destroy his enemies using "laser beams". A relic of the 1960s, who has been frozen for a few decades, he does not seem to understand why his nefarious scheme will not exactly terrify leaders of the world's governments.

While the generation born in the late 1980s and onward might not understand the humour of that particular scene, there are plenty of us born prior, who know exactly what Dr. Evil was talking about. The fact is that growing up in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, when you heard the term laser, it was generally in reference to some sort of super weapon. Kids growing up imagined themselves as space warriors, fully equipped with the latest laser-powered, laser-firing weapons, or as pilots shooting a beam of laser weaponry in a devastating final coup against a perfidious foe.

Well, as is so often the case, the invention of the laser has never had the application that the masses dreamed it would at its discovery. In fact, most of us would probably say that the use of the modern laser is much more productive, practical, and beneficial than would ever have been the case if its application had been restricted to military purposes.

On this site, we are all about the use of the laser in the many ways in which it is applied to our lives today. It is actually fascinating just how many daily activities hinge on the application of the modern laser, and not just when it comes to products that you buy, either. Chances are that you have a couple of active laser beams in your house, and they are not helping you to guard the Hope Diamond, either.

Despite the fact that lasers have become an integral part of everyday life for people all over the continent, the facts about lasers are still generally misunderstood, if they are comprehended at all. So, for your general edification, look for articles and pages on some of the following topics:

The technical aspects of lasers: What is it that makes lasers work, and how can these principles be adapted to suit different applications? Look for answers to these questions in specific sections.

History of lasers: Exactly how long have lasers been around? When was the first one used, and what was it used for?

Types of lasers: Believe it or not, there are hundreds of different types of lasers in use today all over the world. In itself, this topic would make fascinating subject matter for a website. There are just that many different ways to create and use a laser beam.

Practicality of lasers: This is where that old application of lasers that played out as kids' fantasy games will probably come in. Just what are the limitations of lasers, and why did everyone think of them as a super weapon, anyway?

Of course, military buffs continue to have a keen interest in the use of lasers in the combat arena, and they are not misguided in their enthusiasm. The use of lasers has, in fact, changed the face of modern warfare and ballistics in general. However, the application is not so much as destruction wreaked on the part of the laser as how the laser assists conventional weaponry in other ways, something we will look at.

And, finally, we can't forget that the laser still may have applications in the future that we have not thought of yet. One can only imagine the reaction of a 1960's teenager to a proposition that one day he would willingly go out and strap a laser beam device to his shirt and then point its projections toward his brain. However, you can see this notion demonstrated every time you go to a local health club! The uses of lasers are being expanded every year, and this technology has helped us create the multi-media, intricate world of technology that we are so accustomed to today. Using lasers is still considered cutting edge research in many different fields, and again that still includes military.

If you are a fan of the laser, or just wonder what they actually do for us today, then this is the site for you. We take a look at these inventions and their impact on our lives, both practically and theoretically, in great detail. You will find the information we post here interesting, and it will probably help to better develop your understanding of lasers and their uses. wilbrulam
